Former Australian opening batsman Geoff Marsh will now work as the new head coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team on a two-year deal, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) said.

"With his immense coaching and playing experience and skill at the highest levels, Sri Lanka Cricket is in no doubt that he would be a perfect choice for the post of Sri Lanka national team's head coach," the board said in a statement.

Marsh was a part of the 1987 World Cup winning team and also coached Australians to victory during the 1999 World Cup with Steve Waugh – the Australian captain.

Marsh also served as the coach of Zimbabwean cricket team before quitting in the year 2004.

Sri Lanka do not have a Head Coach since the 2011 World Cup final and the appointment of Geoff Marsh is a step forward according to Sri Lankan Cricket Board.

Former Australian batsman Stuart Law stepped in as short-term coach for the tour of England whereas retired Sri Lankan bowler Rumesh Ratnayake coached the side during the recent home series against Australia.
