Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl first on a cloudy rain-clad day. Warner and Wade came out to open the innings for Australia. Warner defended one over or so calmly and then pressed the put on accelerator. Warner unleashed a magnificent switch up for his first boundary in the match, for a gigantic six over midwicket. He hit consecutive boundaries in Ashwin's second over. Vinay Kumar was brought on as first change and he got rid of Warner, getting him caught at extra cover.

Birt joined Wade in the middle and hit a six over mid off to get off the mark. Wade who was keeping his head calm at one end, started cracking fireworks soon, hitting a straight six over long on off Ashwin. Birt was out against the run of play, caught by Raina at extra cover. Wade showed some gas after 10th over and hit flurry of shots for boundaries off Jadeja and Praveen Kumar's overs to complete his fifty. David Hussey also joined the party and hit couple of good shots for four and six. Drizzle intervened in the match again.

Rain break worked for Indians as Wade was clean bowled immediately in first over after break by Raina on individual score of 72.  Hussey hit couple of sixes towards the end of the match to help Australia get the score over 170. Sharma cleaned him up on penultimate ball of last over.

India needed 8.5 per over at the start. It was an inauspicious start for India, with Sehwag scoring a 4 and then nicking one behind in the very first over. Kohli and Gambhir looked good for a while. India seemed to be on top at 47/1 in the 5th over, when Gambhir chipped one straight to cover point to start a collapse that India never recovered from. Kohli top edged a pull the very next over to make Brad Hogg's comeback even more special. Rohit Sharma, who had spent the entire Australian summer on the benches didn't spend much time on the field as he was bowled through a lazy defence off the very first ball that he faced.

Raina tried to match the run rate for a while but was bowled before doing much damage. By the time Jadeja spooned one into the air leaving Dhoni without much support on the other end, India were 81/6, sealing the match to a great extent. Dhoni managed to hit some hard blows, staying not out on 48, but they were always behind the par run rate and the big overs never really arrived. For the Aussies, all the spinners were exceptional, but the turnaround was started by David Hussey and then Brad Hogg, They were on target and far more effective than the India spinners, hardly giving anything for which they didn't have protection on the field. India's disappointing season continued.
